Brushing

Twice a day, two minutes at a time, with a soft brush and fluoride toothpaste. Hold the brush at roughly 45 degrees to the gum, using short, gentle strokes.

The evening brush is the most important: saliva flow drops during sleep, reducing its protective effect.

Cleaning between the teeth

Every day, with floss or interdental brushes. It is the step most often skipped and the one that makes the biggest difference to gum health.

Mouthwash and tongue cleaning

Mouthwash is an addition, not a replacement for brushing. Gently cleaning the tongue can help reduce bad breath.

Common mistakes

  • brushing too hard
  • rinsing heavily with water straight after brushing, which washes away the fluoride
  • brushing immediately after acidic food or drink
  • keeping the same brush for longer than three months
