Teeth whitening: setting realistic expectations

Whitening can improve the shade of your teeth, but it is not suitable in every situation and results are not identical for everyone.

Why teeth darken

Discolouration can be external (coffee, tea, red wine, smoking) or internal, related to tooth structure, age or trauma. The cause directly influences the outcome of whitening.

The assessment beforehand

Untreated decay, inflamed gums or leaking restorations need addressing first. Existing fillings and crowns do not change colour, which may mean replacing them afterwards.

Possible effects and maintaining the result

Temporary tooth sensitivity is common and usually short-lived. How long the result lasts depends on diet and smoking.

No specific final shade can be guaranteed.
