How often should you see a dentist?

The standard answer is 'every six months'. The reality is more nuanced.

Where the six-month interval comes from

It is a practical benchmark, easy to remember and appropriate for many adults at average risk. It is not a universal rule.

Factors that may shorten the interval

  • a tendency to form calculus quickly
  • a history of frequent decay
  • gum disease
  • smoking
  • complex prosthetic work
  • certain medical conditions

Why check-ups matter without symptoms

Early decay and early gum inflammation do not hurt. Found early, they can often be managed with simple measures.
